Cosmic Background Radiation Through To Matters Of The Present

I've always know that cosmic background radiation played a part in causing the 'fuzz' or 'static' on badly tuned TV screens. And as a one-time gambling systems nut, I've always played around with win-lose sequences. Yet, up until recently, I've never made the connection between the two.

The fuzz on a TV screen is a random affair of white and grey speckles, just as a win-lose sequence is a random affair of 'W's and 'L's. The latter would often be expressed like this:

WLWLWLWWWWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLLLWLWLWLWLWLLWLWLWWL
WLLLLWLWLWLLWLWWLWWWLWLLWLWLWLWLWWLLLLWWWLWLWWLWL
WLLWLLLLWWLWLWLLLLLWLWWLWLWLWLWLLLLWWWWLWLWLWLLWW
LWLWLWWLLWLWLWLWWLWLLLLLLLLWLWLWLWLLWLLWLLWLWWWWW
WLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLWWLWLWLWWLWWLWLWLWLWLLWLWLWLWWWWW
WWWWWLWLLLLLWLWLWLWLWLWLLWLLWLWLWLWLWLWLLWLLWLWLW
LWLWLLWWWWWLWLLLLWLLLWWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLLLLWLWLWLWW
WLLLLLWLWLWWLWLWWLWLWLWLLLLLWLWWLWLLWWLLWWLWLLWLW
LLWWLLWLWLWLLLLLWLWWLWWLWLWLWLWLWWLLWLWLWLWLWLWLW
WLLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLLLWLWLWLWLLWWLLWLWLWWLLLWLWLWLWL
LWLLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLWLLLLLLLLWWWL
WLWLWLWLWLLWLWLLWLWLWLLLWLWLWLLLWLWLLLLLLLWLLLWLL

The cosmic background radiation 'fuzz' is a consequence of the BIG BANG. Which was a sounding gun for the whole of existence as we currently know it. While I like to think that the win-lose sequence 'fuzz' is the consequence of the COMPETITION OF LIFE that has existed ever since the BIG BANG occurred. Competition between the elements, competition between life forms, competition within individual life forms. I'm sure you get the picture.

Or do you? Because if such randomness were left to prevail, then no meaningful statement could be made as to the competition of life - certainly not by this particular artist.

Several years ago I created my first work based on the win-lose sequence, I called it 'Chance Control' and it looked like this:

Not long after, I realised that a series of black and white squares could be manipulated to form meaningful images. That the win-lose squares of 'Chance Control' could act a giant pixels. Of course, they needn't be black and white squares, they could just as easily be any combination of two colours, but this is just a minor detail.

I DID, HOWEVER, LIKE THE IDEA THAT PIXELIZATION SUCH AS THIS, CAN BE USED TO REPRESENT THE WIN-LOSE SCENARIOS THAT OCCUR IN RELATION TO THE COMPETITION OF LIFE. AND THAT MANIPULATED WIN-LOSE SEQUENCES (MWLS) COULD BE A POWERFUL WAY FOR ME TO EXPRESS THESE SCENARIOS (IDEAS) THROUGH ART.

And the timing couldn't be better. Because right now we have massive win-lose situations going on. Religiously, politically, socially, not for a very long time have world affairs been in such turmoil and flux.

I'm going to start my series of pixelated works with an image called 'Bono and Child'. Which contrasts an individual's great wealth and achievement, with that of a child who is never likely to experience such things. I'm not having a go at Bono here, who has done many great things to help the poor, I'm just highlighting the gulf that exists between two human beings that walk on the same planet. Even while one of them is trying desperately to help the other.
